What size should the painting be?
The most common mistake with restored art is hanging it too small, alone, in the middle of a big wall. Three rules cover almost every room.
Aurah Living · September 2026Drawn to scale against an 84-inch sofa, warm-white mats shown.
Match the furniture
Above a sofa, bed or console, the art — or the group — should span about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width. Wider than that crowds; narrower floats.
Hang to eye level
Centre of the painting at about 57–60 inches from the floor — gallery height. Over furniture, leave a hand's width or two above the back and let eye level lose.
Let the mat do the scaling
These paintings are dense — they hold a wall at sizes that would look lost with sparser art. A wide warm-white mat gives a smaller painting the presence of a larger one.
The mistake to avoid
Buying the size that looks right on the screen. A phone renders every painting at four inches tall; walls do not. Measure the furniture, take two-thirds of it, and buy the size that covers that number — it will feel large in your hands and correct on the wall.
